Types of Speech Therapy

Types of Speech Disorder

Speech Disorder is a term used for any condition that affects a person's ability to produce sounds and words. It enables the child to produce correct speech sounds. Children suffer from a speech delay and language developmental issues depending on the signs and symptoms shown by children, there are various types of speech disorders.

Significant types of Speech Disorder in children include

1. Voice Disorder

The voice disorder is described as dysphonia in foreign terminology. Depending on the primary cause, the various types of dysphonia are separated by the specifying adjective. Therefore, a vocal disorder originating from paralysis of the larynx is a paralytic dysphonia. Voice Disorder is characterised by some abnormality that may be hoarseness, harshness, breathy, gravelly, or gritty.

Further, there are two types of dysphonia: the Habitual Dysphonia & the Psychogenic Dysphonia.

  • Habitual Dysphonia occurs from faulty speaking habits.
  • Psychogenic Dysphonia originates from emotional causes.

2. Articulatory Disorders
These are a type of speech disorders that involves difficulties in expressing specific kind of sounds. The range of difficulty that a child may experience in expressing are:

  • Cluttering- A strange or weird hindrance, cluttering is characterized by sloppy, erratic, jerky, and hasty speech that may seem to be stuttering but differs from it.
  • Lisping- Lisping almost belongs to articulatory disorders and usually has the same cause as articulatory disorders. Lisping occurs due to wrong tongue placement in the mouth in various ways with the tongue tip between the front teeth or extreme tongue pressure against teeth. This causes hindrance to the airflow inside the mouth.
  • Stuttering or Stammering- It is a type of speech disorder that includes repetition of sounds, syllables or words, prolongation of sounds, and interruptions in speech.

3. Dysphasia or Aphasia

Dysphasia is a type of language disorder in which there is a total or partial loss of speech. Aphasia is an inability or impaired ability to understand or produce speech due to brain damage. In actual, aphasia means the loss of memory for the meaning of language and its production.
