Causes of Speech Disorder

Causes of Speech Delay

Speech delay in children has delayed language development according to their chronological age. There are several reasons which are responsible for language disorder in children. Injury to the brain before or after birth can cause speech impairment. The IIAHP therapy center is known for providing the best speech therapy to the children having a speech delay and language developmental disorder.

The causes of speech delay include:

  • Problem with child's tongue or roof of the mouth
  • Hearing loss
  • Listening to disability
  • Developmental disorder
  • Neurological disorder
  • Brain Injury
  • Intellectual disabilities
  • Drug abuse
  • Physical impairments such as cleft lip or palate
  • Respiratory weakness
  • Muscle weakness
  • Strokes
  • Vocal cord Damage
  • Polyps or nodules on the vocal cord
  • Dementia
  • Oral cancer
  • Laryngeal cancer
  • Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis
  • Huntington's disease
  • Autism or ADHD
  • Extreme environment
  • Prematurity
  • Life events

There can be various reasons for a child suffering from speech delay and impairment. This can severely affect many parts of the body like vocal cords, nerves, and muscles. The vocal cords might be a reason why a child may be suffering from it. Vocal cord damage or vocal cord paralysis leads to imperfect speech.

Muscle weakness or respiratory weakness can also be an essential factor regarding speech disorder, and neurological disorders cause it. As a result, the motor-sensory pathway is affected. Developmental disorders or other medical conditions like Autism, ADHD, Oral Cancer, and Strokes also, lead to speech disorders.

Genetic factors also affect speech disorder sometimes. If a child carries genes which cause it, and if it is a dominant gene, then the child might have a speech disorder. Speech delay and language disorders may have various causes, but often it is difficult to know why they occur. The speech disorder can be hereditary and can continue to the coming generations.

All these causes can be prevented with these few tips:

  • Talk and play with the child every day
  • Try to communicate with a child
  • Take care of a child's teeth and mouth.
  • Give a child some time to talk
  • Try not to interrupt the child while he/she is speaking.
  • Encourage the child to speak but not forcefully.
  • Avoid alcohol and smoking during pregnancy.
  • Do not neglect or abuse the child.
  • Keep the child away from gadgets.
